Early History
In early 1900’s, the rail line of the Tyenna River Valley in western Tasmania was dotted with local railway sidings that were trading fronts of early settlers and their farm produce. Two of these bustling bygone sidings were the Chaplin family’s Arcadian Siding and, a further 500 metres up the line, Sharpes Siding of the Brothers Sharpe.
The Sharpe and Chaplin families were early settlers to Tasmania in the 1800’s. They were pioneers and bush folk who embraced the tranquility and beauty of ‘Giant’ Regnan eucalypt rainforests. They cleared river-flats to pasture with selective manual logging of trees to develop a sustainable subsistence lifestyle. Deeply connected to the forests, the families were early environmentalists appreciating nature and its resources. Today, rainforests at Sharpes Siding prevail, with the youngest generation of Sharpe and Chaplin’s their ongoing caretakers.
